O Pioneer: Opening Titles
Coat of Arms
We made the feature documentary, O Pioneer to redefine what it means to be a pioneer in modern times.
For the opening titles, we wanted to create a world that felt rooted in that landscape while hinting at the personal stories still to come. We built the sequence from real Appalachian maps, abstracted characters, and objects drawn from the film itself—from Nellie’s pin cushion to a train from James’ backyard and the Green Bank satellites Tim and his daughters visit. Each detail carries a piece of the story, turning the titles into an invitation to look closer.

With open hearts and a lens focused on education, we share these project files and details with you, our community, so that you may glean from them something inspirational.
Or tell us how we could have done it more efficiently! We hope our project files may help you in your pursuit of design, animation, and art; but we ask that you respect the artist in these files. In the brush strokes, in the layers of texture, and in each keyframe, sits a person who labored and agonized over their art. So, please use these for educational purposes and steal only the wisdom behind them not the content or ingredients.
Please. Thank you. And godspeed.

James on the Rock
Coat of Arms
A portion of James Morley's story is about the positive influence of a grandparent. We brought one of his fondest memories to life through hand-crafted character and environment design, resulting in an intimate retelling of his memory.

Nellie Visits Japan
Coat of Arms
Nellie’s journey to Japan became a turning point in her career as a textile artist.
We used illustration and animation to transform a formative memory into a visual story full of texture, movement, and discovery.

Tim in Space
Coat of Arms
Through intimate recorded conversations, Tim describes the isolation of the pandemic through the metaphor of an astronaut floating alone in space.
To capture this cinematically, we combined illustrated characters with 3D environments to make the abstract feeling tangible, funny, and relatable.
