For more than 100 years, the Tygart Hotel has evolved alongside the community of Elkins. Woodlands Development & Lending wanted to tell the story of the people and places that helped make the region what it is.
We created The Land Kept Us to bring that history to life through archival photography, maps, illustration, animation, and original footage. Rather than treating the hotel's history as something preserved in the past, we connected it to the living culture of Appalachia today. The result is a portrait of a place that feels less like a historical record and more like a story still being written.
